There are various things can affect your cholesterol levels and a good controlling method. would be taking care of your diet. It is proven that saturated fat and cholesterol in the food make your blood cholesterol level rise. Saturated fat is the main culprit,  but cholesterol in foods also play a role. Therefore, reducing the quantity of saturated fat and cholesterol in your diet helps lower your blood cholesterol level.

Medication used to lower your cholesterol are more effective when combined with a proper diet. Thus they are meant to supplement, not restore, a low-saturated fat, low-cholesterol diet. Try to eat less fatty foods (especially those high in saturated fat) and replace part of the saturated fat in your diet with unsaturated fat. Eat less high-cholesterol food by eating high in complex carbohydrates with starch and fiber.

To the editor: September is National Cholesterol Awareness Month. High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for coronary heart disease, heart attack and stroke. As blood cholesterol rises, so does the risk of coronary heart disease. When other risk factors, such as high blood pressure and tobacco smoke, are present, this risk increases even more.

I took glucosamine and chondroitin for about seven months. I had gotten little relief for my back pain, but I was willing to continue it to see if eventually it would help. Around that time, I had blood work done and found that my cholesterol had jumped from under 200 to 239. I had made no changes in lifestyle or diet other than these supplements. I haven't taken any since.

Keep a diary of the foods you eat during a week and have your cholesterol check to see whether these foods affect your readings. Herbal drugs, like gugulipid, may render some prescription drugs for lowering your cholesterol ineffective.

Avoid eating some red meat, because it is high in saturated fat and cholesterol, which can raise your blood cholesterol -  this does not mean that you need to stop eating it completely, because red meat is a significant source of protein, iron, and other vitamins and minerals.
